Blackjack, or twenty-one, against the dealer: hit, stand, double down and split, with blackjack paying 3 to 2. Play on your own straight away, or open a table and send the link to up to three friends. Free, in your browser, no sign-up, and for play chips only.
Every player plays the dealer and no one else: get closer to 21 than the dealer's hand without going over. Court cards count ten, an ace one or eleven, and an ace with a ten-value card as your first two cards is a blackjack, the best hand in the game.
The rules are the common casino ones: six packs, the dealer looks under an ace or a ten for blackjack and stands on soft 17, you may double on any two cards and after a split, split up to four hands, and take insurance when the dealer shows an ace. There is no surrender.
The shoe is shuffled fresh before every hand, so counting cards gets you nothing, and nobody, not even the table, can see the dealer's hole card before it is turned. On your own, a hint can show the basic-strategy play for every hand while you learn it.
How to play
Rules and strategy
Card values, soft hands, doubling, splitting, insurance and exactly when the dealer draws, with pictures.
Open a table and send the link: up to four players sit at it, each against the same dealer, with everyone's cards face up. The game lasts 10, 20 or 30 hands, and whoever ends with the most chips wins.
Everyone bets at the same time and plays in turn, with 20 seconds a decision if you want a clock. Run out of chips and you are out; the last one left in wins.
Questions about blackjack
Is this blackjack for real money?
No. You play for play chips only: nothing can be bought, won or paid out, and there is no sign-up. Everyone starts with 1,000 chips, and on your own you get a fresh 1,000 whenever you run out.
When does the dealer hit?
Always on 16 or less, and never on 17 or more, a soft 17 included. The dealer has no choices at all, which is why basic strategy can work out the best play for every hand.
When should I double down?
Mostly on a hard 11 against anything but an ace, a hard 10 against a 2 to 9, and a 9 against a 3 to 6. You put down a second bet and get exactly one more card. The strategy guide has the full charts.
Should I take insurance?
No. It pays 2 to 1, but the hole card under an ace is a ten less than a third of the time, so insurance loses about 7 per cent of what you put on it in the long run. Even money on a blackjack is the same bet.
Can I play blackjack with friends?
Yes. Open a table and send the link to up to three friends. Everyone plays the same dealer, sees everyone's cards and bets at the same time; after the number of hands you chose, whoever has the most chips wins.
